Fewer deer killed in opening weekend

November 20, 2008

Cold, blustery weather may have cut the opening-weekend harvest of Missouri's main firearms deer season, but hunters shot nearly 100,000 deer over two days, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Hunters checked 98,386 deer Saturday and Sunday, and that number was down 2 percent from 2007 first-weekend totals. The record for opening weekend of the November hunt was set in 2004, when hunters checked 133,136 deer.

The Conservation Department recorded one firearms-related deer-hunting accident during the opening weekend. The nonfatal accident was classified as self-inflicted.
