Independent filmmaker and Drury University artist in residence Patrick Mureithi will show his film “ICYIZERE: hope” at 7 p.m. today in the Gillioz Theatre.

The film documents a series of three-day reconciliation workshops that brought together 10 victims and 10 perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

On his first trip to Rwanda in 2007, Mureithi collected 40 hours of footage and discovered that the victims and those who carried out the genocide were willing to consider forgiveness, according to a news release.

Mureithi returned to Rwanda in March of 2008, where he shot 60 more hours of video to show how the participants in the workshops were progressing.

Mureithi is currently working on the final version of the film. The first cut of the film, which Mureithi will show Thursday at the Gillioz, was shown at the Rwandan film festival, on Rwandan television and to 2,500 inmates at a prison in Gisenyi, Rwanda during his trip in March. Mureithi is the artist in residence at Drury and at Missouri State University.
