Milleson hints at changes after Lady Bears stumble

Erin Bolen • November 20, 2008

I just got back from Tulsa, and I thought I'd throw some extra tidbits from Wednesday's 64-56 loss on the blog.

After the game, Missouri State women's basketball coach Nyla Milleson and her staff stood in the hallway at the Reynolds Center for several minutes discussing just how wrong everything went against the Golden Hurricane.

The Lady Bears (0-2) had multiple chances to get back into the game and even regain the lead, especially late, but they could not execute their plays, and their defense eventually couldn't keep the game close enough for the sporadic shooting to come through. Then again, when you make just 22-of-74 shot attempts, 5-of-31 from 3-point range, and have a 29.7 shooting percentage, it's hard to blame the defense.

Milleson told me she will consider changing the lineup. Since she's said in the past she doesn't pay much attention to the starters since anyone can be subbed out, I think she's trying to wake some players up rather than force any tactical change.

She wasn't afraid to pull her starters against Tulsa. Senior Maggie Dwyer played just 17 minutes, the fewest of the starters even though she was not in any foul trouble. She was pulled for freshman Lacey Boshe with 1:57 left and did not reenter. She finished the game with five points, four rebounds, a steal and two turnovers.

The Lady Bears went scoreless for a stretch of 8:32 in the first half as a 12-9 lead turned into a 27-12 deficit. They were able to pull down some rebounds during that stretch but could not drive to the basket for easy shots. Only one of the team's shot attempts during the run was a layup attempt.

In fact, MSU out-rebounded the Golden Hurricane 47-45, but the team relied on 3-pointers and jump shots on offense because there was no steady inside presence.

Milleson knew the post position would be a problem coming into the season with no true veteran post and two freshmen who are a bit too short. The Golden Hurricane fully exploited the height, strength and savvy advantage inside with a pair of 6-foot-3 players who combined for 19 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks.

The Lady Bears aren't scheduled to practice Thursday. Their next game is 2:05 p.m. Sunday against Arkansas State.
